How to use the team generator
- Add people. Type a name and press Enter, use Add examples, or open Paste a list and enter one person per line, such as
Alice, F, 4. - Set gender and skill for each person if you want them balanced. Choose M or F, and a skill from 1 (newest) to 5 (strongest).
- Choose what to balance. Balance gender and Balance skill are separate switches. Turn one off and its column disappears and is ignored. Turn both off for a plain random split.
- Pick the number of teams with the − and + buttons, and rename them under Team names if you like.
- Press Generate teams. Not happy? Shuffle again gives another equally fair result.
- Share the result with Copy (plain text) or Download CSV (opens in any spreadsheet).
Your list and settings are saved on this device only, so they are still here next time. Clear all removes them.
How the teams are balanced
Fair teams are about several things at once, so the generator scores every possible split and looks for the lowest score:
- Size first. Team sizes never differ by more than one person.
- Gender. Each team gets its fair share of each gender, so counts differ by at most one. People with no gender set are treated as their own group and spread evenly too.
- Skill. Each team gets a fair mix of skill levels (not all the 5s on one team) and a total skill close to its fair share.
- Your rules. Locked people stay on their team, and people who must be apart or together are kept that way. If your rules make something impossible, such as three people who must all be apart with only two teams, you are told.
It builds a good first split, then improves it with thousands of random swaps and keeps the best. Many splits are equally fair, so it picks one at random, and Shuffle again picks another. With very small groups perfect balance is sometimes impossible. For example, 5 people in 2 teams means one team has an extra person, so the skill averages cannot match exactly.
Tips for fair teams
- Use the full 1–5 range for skill. If everyone is a 3, skill balancing has nothing to work with.
- Rate skill for the activity (for example, 5 means a team's best players), not general ability.
- Use locks for captains: lock one captain to each team and let the generator build the rest around them.
- Use keep apart for people who should mix, and keep together for friends, siblings or carpools.
- If you only care about gender or only about skill, switch the other one off.
Frequently asked questions
How does the team generator balance teams?
It keeps team sizes within one person of each other, spreads each gender evenly, then spreads skill so every team gets a fair mix of levels and a similar total. It tries thousands of arrangements and keeps the best, so the result is balanced but still random.
Can I turn gender or skill balancing off?
Yes. Balance gender and Balance skill are separate switches. When one is off, that column is hidden and ignored, so you can make purely random teams or balance on just one thing.
Are the teams really random?
Every result starts from a random shuffle, and many different splits are equally fair, so each press of Shuffle again gives a different balanced result. It is random within the limits of being fair.
What if the numbers do not divide evenly?
Team sizes differ by at most one person. For example, 10 people in 3 teams make teams of 4, 3 and 3. The extra people, and the gender and skill shares, are spread as evenly as possible.
How do I keep two people on different teams, or the same team?
Open Keep apart or together, add a rule, choose two people and whether they must be on different teams or the same team. You can also lock one person to a specific team with the Team menu in their row.
How do I import a list of names?
Open Paste a list and enter one person per line, such as Alice, F, 4. Gender (M or F) and skill (1 to 5) are optional and can come in any order. You can paste straight from a spreadsheet: tab-separated columns work too.
Is my list of people stored or sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Your list is saved only on your own device so it is there when you come back, and Clear all removes it. Nothing is uploaded.
